Stroke epidemiology 2/3

Stroke is one of the major causes of death and disability in adults in developing countries. In recent years, the global population has been increasing leading direct and indirect increasement of the economic cost of stroke. In the less developed countries, peoples lifestyle changes regularly to cope with the modern world. Risk factors relating to the lifestyle are the targeted aspects in epidemiological studies, which can help to identify a certain group of people or regions with a higher or lower risks for stroke. In addition, epidemiology and data analysis can help the researcher with a better scientific understanding of the underlying causes of stroke. Lastly, communicating with the targeted people with a high risk of stroke helps health policy makers to develop an effective preventive strategy against stroke.
Globally, the incident of stroke in each new decade has been rising by double among the age group of 55 years. Considering adults aged 35 to 44, the occurrence of stroke is 30 to 120 of 100,000 per year. Children which have sickle cell anemia disease have a higher risk to have stroke between the ages 2-5 years.

Controlling stroke risk factors plays a significant role in decreasing stroke incidence. There has been evidence suggesting increased incident by 25% of stroke case in developing countries compared to industrialized countries. The main reason for this difference is not well identified yet, but the developing countries are unlikely to have the same progress in acute stroke treatment and secondary stroke prevention measures.
